Social media news is a fallacy (kind of)

Reading an article on Mashable I summarised the title of this post.

In the article it explains the data set out by HP‘s Social Computing Research Group on Twitter trending topics.

It appears that twitter users are no more of a news outlet than a kid with a paper round, delivering the musings of the New York Times, The Telegraph, ESPN, @breakingnews and The Huffington Post in the guise of socially sourced journalism.

To be honest, my impression of trends on twitter are just people asking #whyisthistrending? and self-perpetuating the confusion.
